No último fim de semana estavamos acampando, e passamos muito tempo na praia. A praia foi arenosa, mas teve partes rochosas. No último dia lá, eu percebi as pedras e decidi que eu gostaria de tentar levantar-las. Eu levantei algumas sem problema, até que eu alcançei essa:

I failed my first attempt with this rock. I lifted it to my lap, and stood up, but couldn't shoulder it. This time, with the rock already high on my chest, I could move it on top of my shoulder.
O ponto dessa história é que minha sucesso com uma técnica melhor me fez começei a pensar sobre o esporte de "levantamento de pedra". Levantamento de pedra é mesmo um esporte, que é popular e tem muita história em vários paises, como Escócia, Islândia, Índia, e Paquistão. Acho que este esporte deve ser o esporte mais antigo no mundo, salvo se corrida ou luta. Entenda que eu falo isso no sentido de "oi mano, qual é a pedra mais pesada que você pode levantar?", não no sentido de um esporte organizado com regras. Acredito que pessoas tinham levantado pedras por divertição e competição desde tempos imemoriais, literalmente desde centenas de milhares anos atrás. Talvez seja melhor se eu disser que é o jogo mais antigo no mundo.
The point of this story is that my success with a better technique made me start to think about the sport of "stone lifting". Stone lifting is a sport, that is popular and has lots of history in various countries, such as Scotland, Iceland, India, Japan, and Pakistan. I think this sport must be the oldest sport in world, save for running or wrestling. Understand that I say this in the sense of "Hey man, what do you think is the heaviest rock you can lift?", not in the sense of an organized sport with rules. I believe that people have been lifting stones for fun and competition since time immemorial, literally since hundreds of thousands of years ago. Maybe its better if I say that it's the oldest game in the world.

Finally, the activity that makes us feel most connected with our ancestors must be looking at a fire. I don't know about you, but when I look at a fire, and see the flames dancing against the black of the night, I feel that I am doing the most ancient thing in the history of humanity.
